Invisalign Teen Treatment process
Once your American Smile Teen expert has confirmed you’re eligible for Invisalign treatment, they will take photos, X-rays and digital scans, or a dental impression of your teeth. These records will be used to create a ClinCheck® 3D treatment plan, just for you.
After being custom-made and shipped to our office, you’ll receive a series of aligners to wear every day and change at home – on average every 1-2 weeks.
You’ll visit American Smile Teen approximately every 6-8 weeks to monitor your progress and receive new aligners. After finishing your treatment plan, retainers will be required to maintain your new smile.

Questions & Answers
Braces can help improve your teen’s smile and make their teeth straighter. Invisalign Teen braces can also improve your teen’s dental health and overall health, since untreated problems with bite can make it hard to chew and interfere with eating. If your teen has a bad bite, he/she might be also prone to cavities or gum disease because it may be hard for them to clean their teeth.
Invisalign Teen has been specifically developed with teenagers, parents and leading orthodontists, who understand the active lifestyles and unique treatment needs of teenage patients. The SmartTrack material of Invisalign clear aligners is clinically proven to improve control of tooth movement. And more than 1.6 million teenagers have transformed their smile with Invisalign Teen.
There is no official minimum age limit for Invisalign Teen treatment, but patients must have most of their adult teeth and be old enough to adhere to the regimen of wearing the aligners 22 hours a day. It is very individual - some preteens will meet these requirements and some teenagers will not.
There are a lot of different types of braces available for teens. At American Smile, we offer all modern teeth straightening solutions. Each case is different and depends on the biological age of the child, as well as his/her dental age. For some teenagers, Invisalign Teen would be the best solution but, in more complex cases, we might recommend other types of braces. The best solution is to schedule a consultation with an expert orthodontist and discover what type of treatment would suit your teen.
One of the most common questions we hear about Invisalign Teen treatment is whether or not it is painful. With traditional metal braces, the pain the patient feels might never be intense, but there is a certain amount of pain that comes with this type of orthodontic treatment. Invisalign is often advertised as ‘less painful’ than metal braces. However, there may still be some degree of discomfort to start with - such as aching and tenderness in the gums as the teeth start to move. This usually settles down in a few days. The amount of discomfort varies significantly from person to person.
Parents and teenagers always ask if Invisalign Teen affects food intake or if diet habits will have to be changed. The simple answer is no – there is no need for a diet change! We suggest taking out the aligners during meal times and cleaning the teeth after the meal by chewing a sugarless gum or by brushing the teeth, before reinserting the aligners. It is recommended to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours per day.
This is a very common question from teenagers! It is not recommended to chew gum while wearing Invisalign clear aligners. We do suggest removing Invisalign braces during meal times then, after the meal, chewing sugarless gum. It’s actually a really good way to get saliva flowing in the mouth, which helps wash away food particles from the teeth and gums and helps prevent oral health problems. Chewing is the most efficient way to stimulate salivary flow, and clinical studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after meals can help prevent tooth decay.
Coke and other sodas don’t affect the Invisalign Teen aligners themselves, but sodas are very acidic and contain sugars. These sugars and acids will accumulate underneath if the aligners are worn while drinking soda, creating a highly acidic microclimate next to the teeth that will damage them by eroding away tooth structure. This is not a problem if you simply don’t eat or drink with the aligners in your mouth - so don’t!
The majority of Invisalign patients wear their aligners for about a year. At the same time, simple straightening can sometimes be carried out as quickly as 6 months, particularly if it’s only the front 6 teeth. However, 6 months isn’t enough time to move the whole tooth, including the roots, into the right place, which is why we suggest that parents and teens prepare to spend 1-2 years using the aligners to strengthen the teeth in harmony with the lips and jaws. In order to get an exact estimate, it’s best to meet with an orthodontist who will examine your teen’s teeth and suggest how long the treatment will take.
The teenager will be asked to wear retainers after Invisalign treatment. Retainers are designed to keep the teeth straight and it is important the patient wears them as instructed by the orthodontist.
Some parents are worried and ask if there is a chance that the Invisalign treatment won’t be successful. We usually state that orthodontic treatment with Invisalign should be successful if your teen is committed to the treatment. The patient will need to look after his/her teeth and brush well, follow the orthodontist’s instructions and attend appointments to monitor the process.
Among the benefits of Invisalign Teen are that they’re virtually invisible; they’re removable for better cleaning, eating, and playing sports or musical instruments; and they’re BPA-free of harmful toxins.
Among the drawbacks are that they won’t suit rule breakers (if a teenager doesn’t wear aligners for at least 22 hours a day, the results of the treatment might be different from the initial plan, or will take longer). It’s important to know all the details before you decide to get fitted with clear aligners.
As with many treatments, investment in Invisalign aligners is dependent on the needs of an individual teenager. It’s best to come for an orthodontic consultation with one of the American Smile experts and discuss your specific case, before making the decision to commit to the treatment or not.
