Improve Your Smile With Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are restorations that cover the face of the tooth. They can be used in many situations to improve the appearance of the smile and are a minimally invasive technique with predictable results. Veneers are only suitable in specific cases and must be carefully treatment planned.

Veneers can either be fabricated from porcelain or composite (white filling).

About Porcelain Veneers

There are two types of porcelain; pressed porcelain and feldspathic porcelain. The main difference in the two types is the way in which they are made. Usually, it is the dentist that decides which one will be most suitable. It is possible for natural aesthetics to be achieved with either type of porcelain and the lab technicians that we use are skilled in both techniques.

Porcelain veneers can be made in sections as thin as 0.5mm, which means that they can be placed on a tooth with minimal or no preparation. The inner surface of the veneer that is bonded to the tooth is specially treated to ensure that a high bond strength is achieved and the outer surface is glazed or polished so that it mimics the natural surface of the tooth and retains its colour.

Porcelain veneers can be made in sections as thin as 0.5mm. This means that they can be placed on a tooth with minimal or no preparation and any preparation is limited to the outer enamel layer.

By keeping the preparation within the enamel we can ensure that the tooth remains strong and the cause minimal risk or damage. The bond strength of the veneer to the tooth is also optimal and therefore there is more predictability and longevity and less chance of failure.

There are circumstances in which more preparation of the tooth is needed, this may be due to decay, existing fillings, overcrowding or over spacing of the teeth.

  • In the case of existing fillings or decay the decision on whether a veneer would be appropriate is taken by the dentist. If a veneer is not appropriate then a crown preparation will be carried out. This decision depends on a number of factors, most importantly the amount of tooth structure remaining and the pressure exerted on the tooth during biting and chewing.
  • In the case of overcrowding or spacing, orthodontics (braces) may be suggested prior to veneer treatment in order that the veneer preparation can be minimal.

These issues will always be discussed in full during the planning phase of treatment.

Porcelain veneers are an irreversible form of treatment. Even if they are bonded to the teeth without preparation of the tooth, the surface of the enamel is treated in a certain way in order to bond the porcelain to the tooth and therefore they cannot be removed without being replaced.

Porcelain veneers can last for a long time. Longevity is dependent on the initial treatment planning, care of the veneers once they have been placed, regular maintenance and habits of the patients such as alcohol intake, smoking, oral hygiene etc.

The lifespan of veneers can be up to fifteen to twenty years. After this period of time they will not just come off. The main reason for replacement is that they can begin to look slightly aged and worn, the extent of this is still less than natural teeth as the glaze can prevent the veneers from discolouring.

How to choose the colour of a porcelain veneer?

Our bespoke veneer service ensures that our patients have individually tailored veneers rather than generic veneers that have the same characteristics for everyone.

The choice of the appearance is left to the patient. In order to help make that decision the dentists at American Smile go through all parameters that make up the final appearance of the veneers.

The following points are discussed;

  • Shape
  • Shade
  • Texture
  • Polish and glaze
  • Characteristics

After this conversation we can ensure a bespoke service and the aesthetic success of your smile.  In order to communicate some of these things the dentists here at the practice can create an image of your final desired smile.

At American Smile we offer our patients 'Digital Smile design' which helps to choose the right type of veneer for the face.

We also have developed a comprehensive book with examples, describing how each type of a veneer can affect the colour of the teeth.
