Dental Exam Appointment at American Smile

Your First Visit

Your Examination

This is a comprehensive examination where all aspects of your oral health are evaluated. We assess your vulnerability to tooth decay and gum disease, and provide you with a gentle preventive screening for any early signs of oral cancer.

No one likes to spend more time at the dentist than needed, but in our spa-like environment you won’t notice how quickly an hour goes by. We take time and perform a thorough examination, explaining all our findings and the implications should any issues be left untreated. You will not feel rushed to make any decision and our Treatment Coordinators will be with you every step of the way.

We check your teeth alignment, bite and the relationship between your upper and lower jaws, looking for any signs of disorder that could lead to more serious conditions, including recurrent headaches and migraines.

Intraoral radiography is used as necessary, for diagnosis of early interdental carious lesions (tooth decay) and/or secondary caries in current restorations.

Why is it important to visit your dentist regularly, even if you don’t experience any pain or sensitivity?

1. Prevention is always better than cure!

And by better we also mean cheaper and much less time-consuming than treatment of decay or caries that went undiagnosed for too long.

2. Oral cancer is on the rise.

Oral cancer rates have been increasing in recent years, according to data from the American and British Cancer Societies.

Several factors have been linked to the increase in oral cancer rates, including:

  • HPV (human papillomavirus) infection: HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that can cause oral and other cancers. The incidence of HPV-related oral cancers has been increasing in recent years.
  • Smoking and tobacco use: Tobacco use is a major risk factor for oral cancer. The use of smokeless tobacco products such as chewing tobacco and snuff is also a risk factor.
  • Alcohol consumption: Heavy alcohol consumption is another risk factor for oral cancer.
  • Poor diet: A diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in processed foods has been linked to an increased risk of oral cancer.

Regular dental check-ups can help detect oral cancer early, when it is more treatable. During a dental examination, your dentist will look for signs of oral cancer, including red or white patches in the mouth, lumps or bumps, and other abnormalities.

3. Your oral health is connected to overall health.

Oral health is closely linked to overall health, and poor oral health can contribute to a variety of health problems. Here are a few ways that oral health can contribute to overall health:

  • Infection: Oral infections such as gum disease can spread to other parts of the body, increasing the risk of infection and inflammation.
  • Cardiovascular disease: Gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, because of bacteria circulation in your blood.
  • Respiratory infections: Bacteria in the mouth can be inhaled into the lungs, increasing the risk of respiratory infections such as pneumonia.
  • Diabetes: Poor oral health can make it more difficult to control blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of complications in people with diabetes.
  • Pregnancy complications: Gum disease has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight.

Maintaining good oral health through regular dental check-ups, brushing and flossing regularly, as well as avoiding tobacco & excessive alcohol consumption can all help reduce the risk of these and other health problems. By taking care of your oral health, you can ensure your overall health and well-being.
