What are composite veneers?

In dentistry, placement of a thin layer of any material over a tooth is referred to as dental veneer or laminates. In essence, composite veneers are a layer of resin material that is directly applied to the teeth. Composite veneers are sometimes called instant veneers, because they can be done in one visit; leaving you with a beautiful smile in a matter of a few hours.

What composite veneers are made from?

Composite veneers are made from the resin based material and applied as a thin layer directly to the tooth.

How composite veneers work?

Composite veneers work by helping to create a more visually aesthetic tooth. They can either be built up in layers by hand by the dentist using a combination of colours and techniques in order to produce a life-like appearance or they can be prefabricated and then bonded to the tooth. They are bonded in the same way as a porcelain veneer is.

For example, if your tooth is chipped, we can quickly fix it, without the need for any extensive procedures. Thus, one of the advantages of a composite veneer is that it does not need to fully cover all of a tooth. Such a technique is not possible with porcelain veneers.

Who can get composite veneers?

Almost any person can be a candidate for composite veneers. This type of veneers can solve many dental concerns and improves the appearance of the teeth. Imagine getting rid of those chipped, yellow teeth, teeth with dark spots in one simple appointment – this is what instant composite veneers can do for you.

Here are a few reasons to get composite veneers:

  • To protect the surface of the teeth and help if there is enamel loss. If the enamel of your teeth is damaged, composite veneers may be one of the few options you have available. Built over your teeth layer by layer, composite veneers will provide you with a stable cover of the flawed enamel. Most importantly, composite veneers will help you preserve your natural teeth!
  • To make teeth appear bigger. If your teeth are genetically small and don’t provide you with your ideal smile, composite veneers may be a perfect solution for you. The sculpturing approach of the treatment will allow your dentist to re-imagine your smile based on your wishes. Once you determine the desired outcome, your new smile will be built over your natural teeth without filing them down.
  • Change the colour of the teeth, usually to a whiter shade. Although we all dream of that Hollywood smile, it simply isn’t something that all of us can easily achieve. Yellowish teeth  do not necessarily reflect lifestyle choices or a lack of oral hygiene. You could be genetically predisposed to yellow teeth, in which cases no amount of whitening would do the trick. If this sounds like you, then you may want to consider composite veneers.
  • To close gaps between teeth or make them larger in size. Many people have irregular spacing and gaps, especially between the front teeth. While some people choose to retain the gap (diastema) between their teeth, others find this undesirable, and it has an impact on the way they look, eat, and speak. Composite veneers are ideal for closing such gaps to improve appearance, facial expression, and dental function.
  • To repair any chipped or broken part of a tooth. If you had a bad accident, we can restore your tooth in a matter of hours.
  • To repair worn down teeth. If you suffered from a bad habit in the past (such as grinding or opening bottles with your teeth) a re-creation of your smile with composite veneers may be the best way to go.

Do composite veneers look natural?

Composite veneers can look natural and are considered the least invasive treatment option to help you achieve a more aesthetic, natural smile. Due to that fact, that composite veneers are applied directly to the teeth - the quality and look depends on the skill of and experience of the dentist who makes them.

Rest assured, that at American Smile we create beautiful and natural looking composite veneers, because this is what we are passionate about - natural looking smiles.

Composite veneers or dental bonding is one of the least invasive treatment options for improving your smile. In comparison with alternative porcelain veneers the benefits of composite veneers are:

  1. Composite veneers can improve your smile quickly, in just one appointment. In comparison, porcelain veneers are created in a dental laboratory and usually require two or three appointments to complete.
  2. There is no need to drill teeth in a vast majority of the cases. This makes composite veneers one of the most desirable forms of dental treatments.
  3. Unlike porcelain veneers, composite veneers do not necessarily need to cover all the tooth surfaces. This makes them the ideal choice for closing or reducing gaps between teeth. A good example of this is the gaps most commonly seen with top front teeth, otherwise known as a diastema.
  4. Composite veneers are easily repairable in comparison with alternative options. When porcelain veneers break or chip, a new one has to be made by the lab to replace it. Composite veneers can be easily repaired right away. Therefore composite veneers are a much cheaper and faster solution.
  5. It is easier to reverse composite veneers than porcelain veneers. This is because when placing composite veneers, no tooth tissue has been drilled off in the first place.
  6. Treatments are usually completed in one visit as composite veneers are directly placed on the teeth. With composite veneers the transformation of your smile is instant.
  7. Composite veneers are usually cheaper than porcelain veneers or crowns.
  8. Almost anyone can have composite veneers.

What is the cost of composite veneers?

At American Smile Dental Clinic the fee for composite veneers is based on our skill, experience, how long it takes to do and how challenging is the case. Currently, a price for one composite veneer starts from £275. This puts composite veneers in a lower price range than porcelain veneers. During your complimentary consultation, you will get a personalised estimation based on your specific concerns.

What are the disadvantages of composite veneers?

Comparing with porcelain veneers:

  1. Composite veneers stain more easily than porcelain veneers, but they can be polished and cleaned regularly. The diets and habits of an individual can contribute a lot to the level of staining.
  2. Composite veneers cannot be whitened. But this is true with any form of dental restorations including porcelain veneers.
  3. Composite veneers last about 3-5 years, whilst porcelain veneers are expected to last 7-10 years. However, good oral hygiene and maintenance can make your composite veneers last longer

Questions & Answers

What are composite veneers made of?

These veneers are made from white filling material, this resin based material and is applied as a thin layer directly to the tooth.

To bond your composite veneers, your dentist will clean the surface of your tooth and etch it slightly to ensure that the veneer bonds securely. They will then dry your tooth to remove excess moisture, and will then apply the bonding agent (dental cement and resin). Once your tooth is ready, your dentist will apply the composite material in layers. Skilfully sculpting your tooth into shape, the dentist will remove any additional dental composite, before the final smoothing and polishing of your tooth.

You can get composite veneers at American Smile, please schedule a free appointment to discuss your case with our dentist, Dr. Annie Smith

Composite veneers are strong and do not break easily. Composite veneers can chip for a variety of reasons, most commonly biting and chewing on hard food or grinding and clenching teeth. But even if they do break, they are usually easily repaired in one visit. This is not the case with porcelain veneers.

Composite veneers last about 3-5 years. However, good oral hygiene and maintenance can make your composite veneers last longer. Our dentists have seen cases when composite veneers lasted over 10 years.

Composite veneers are considered to be a reversible treatment option because there is no drilling involved.

Composite veneers are not covered by the insurance. However, we are happy to work with you and offer flexible payment options.

Composite veneers cannot be whitened. But this is true with any form of dental restorations including porcelain veneers. We suggest that the patient whitens their teeth first and then has the composite veneers placed. Then the colour of the veneers can then be matched to the whitened teeth.

Composite veneers mean that a tooth/teeth will be covered with a small layer of the resin, which will make your smile more visually balanced and aesthetic.

Composite veneers help to improve small visual imbalances in the teeth.

Composite veneers last about 3-5 years in comparison with porcelain veneers which are expected to last about 7-10 years. However, there can be a large variation in longevity of both types. Our dentists have seen some composite veneers to last for more than 10 years, where in other cases porcelain veneers have not lasted for more than few years. In our experience, keeping good oral hygiene and maintenance, composite veneers can last much longer.

We often get asked - can composite veneers straighten teeth? We understand, so many of us wish we had a fast solution to correct crooked teeth instead of brace treatment. However, we do NOT recommend using composite veneers to straighten teeth. Instead we offer multiple teeth straightening solutions for time-constrained people. Please check out invisible braces solutions (Lingual braces, Invisalign). Some treatments can help achieve fantastic results in only 3-6 months.

Composite veneers do not damage your teeth.

I chipped my front tooth around 10 years ago. Always had it done via dentists who did not care about how my smile looked but instead just... to repaired the chipped section. I was never happy with my smile or gum line, always being extremely self conscious of smiling for photos/being up closer to people around me. I had a couple of other consultations before Italo with other dentists. One whom said a veneer would be the solution, however, I was adamant that this was not necessary. The first consultation with Italo and the team put my mind at ease and their friendly manner made the whole process a simple and stress free one. They explained every possible detail which is what I wanted, Italo was very reassuring, understanding of my insecurity and had the best possible solution. I was extremely excited to see the change in my smile! After my consultation, 2 weeks later I had my appointment. I was nervous but throughout Italo kept me involved in what was taking place. After correcting my front two teeth to be identical and contouring my gums. I must say I could not be happier with my smile!! It has given me extra confidence in every day life. For any dental work, I will be returning and I continue to recommend Italo and the team to everyone I know!! Thank you again! *photo taken straight after more
