An improved smile in a matter of hours? Yes, you can have it! Cosmetic bonding is a fast, painless and non-invasive procedure that can help you to fall in love with your smile.

Teeth bonding is used to:

  • Repair chipped and broken down teeth
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Reshape teeth
  • Enhance worn down teeth
  • Disguise pointy teeth (especially canines)
  • Lengthen short teeth
  • Whiten discoloured teeth
  • Disguise mild crowding
  • Provide a full mouth "mini" smile makeover

The process

Unlike veneers which are manufactured in the laboratory, composite bonding is generally done in a single visit at the clinic. In certain cases where multiple teeth require bonding, we anticipate 2-3 appointments for the whole process.

First, a “wax-up” is made which will demonstrate the proposed final aesthetic outcome and when both you and the dentist are happy, your teeth will be bonded. Once you are ready, the composite resin will be applied to the needed areas. The composite resin will be hardened with a special light before more layers are added. Once the bonding process is set, the composite resin and your natural teeth will be contoured and polished for an even result.

The composite resin used is almost as strong as your natural teeth. With good care, dental bonding can last up to 7 years.  During your annual dental exam, your dental care specialist will help you decide if the dental bonding and contouring procedure needs to be re-done to maintain your smile.

Your questions and answers about composite bonding

What is a composite material?

Composite is a material produced from resins and a number of fillers. Composite bonding is a hot trend in the dentistry, due to its aesthetically pleasing appearance. Also the dentist is able to completely match the shade, translucency, and texture of a natural tooth.

Is composite bonding right for me?

If your teeth have minor cosmetic imperfections that you’re conscious of, filing may well be a quick and effective way to even out your smile. Even if porcelain veneers are your ultimate goal, you could opt for tooth reshaping as a short-term measure while you save for the more expensive treatment.

What are the main benefits of composite bonding?

It is non-invasive (so no injections/needles), no drilling of the natural tooth surface, you can get a beautiful result on the same day!

Are there any drawbacks?

One minor disadvantage of composite bonding is that it has a greater tendency to stain than natural teeth but composite stains can be easily polished off in future by the dentist.

How long does it take?

Usually 4 to 6 teeth with composite bonding can be done on the same day. You can have a new smile in just 1 or 2 hours.

How long does composite bonding last for?

Approximately every five years it will need to be replaced, although this should be sooner in clients who smoke or drink a lot of  coffee and wine.
